Among trace gases depleting stratospheric ozone, nitrogen oxide (NO) is the most abundant to occur naturally. Its very short lifetime makes direct evaluation very difficult, so we focus instead on the longer-lived family NO_x (=NO+NO₂). While neither NO nor NO₂ are assimilated by BASCOE, it assimilated N₂O observations. N₂O is the main reservoir of NO_x in the stratosphere
